Comparative analysis between modern lightning data obtained from Lightning Location Systems (LLS) and the traditional method of using keraunic levels (thunderstorm days) for assessing lightning activity.

While keraunic levels have been historically used to estimate the frequency of thunderstorms in a given area, they have significant limitations due to their reliance on subjective observations and generalized data. In contrast, LLS offers a more advanced approach, providing objective, high-resolution, and real-time data that significantly enhances the accuracy and reliability of lightning risk assessments. A Flash is not a Stroke !

Let’s clarify the difference between a flash and a stroke.

  • A flash is a complete lightning event, which can contain multiple strokes.

  • A stroke is a single discharge within a flash.

  • For typical downward negative flashes, there are usually 2 to 5 strokes per flash. This number can vary based on location and season. 

  • Generally, the first stroke has the highest peak current, though this is not always the case.

  • The subsequent strokes follow the first stroke at intervals of approximately 60 milliseconds.

  • In contrast, typical positive flashes usually involve a single stroke.

  • One critical concept to understand is the return stroke, which refers to the visible propagation of the flash upward after a downward leader makes contact with the ground. This upward motion is what we visually perceive as the lightning flash.

  • The peak current of the return stroke is a key parameter, as it is primarily responsible for inducing voltage on overhead lines, making it a significant factor in power system performance and protection.

Characteristics and Statistics of Lightning Discharges

🌩️ CG lightning represents only 25% of global lightning activity, with the rest being intra-cloud (IC) discharges.

🌍 Upward flashes mainly originate from tall structures like UHV towers, with relatively low peak currents.

⚡ Negative polarity flashes dominate, accounting for 90% of CG discharges, while positive polarity flashes are rare but more frequent during winter storms.

🔁 More than 80% of CG flashes involve multiple strokes, typically ranging from 3 to 5.

⏱️ Inter-stroke interval: On average, 60 milliseconds, but can range from less than 1 ms to several hundred milliseconds.

🔋 First stroke power: Usually 2-3x stronger than subsequent strokes, although 1/3 of flashes have a subsequent stroke with higher current.

⚡ Energy released per flash: About 1 gigajoule (GJ), with most energy creating thunder, light, and heat!
